RED FLAG WARNING - SANTA ANA WIND EVENTS
Volume 3 - Autumn Fire Season 2024
HIGH TEMPERATURE + LOW HUMIDITY + STRONG WINDS
FIRE WEATHER WATCH: The National Weather Service issues a Fire Weather Watch to alert the public to the fact that upcoming weather conditions could result in an extensive wildland fire occurrence or extreme fire behavior. The affected communities are asked to be vigilant and respond to fire department instructions for their own safety. By cooperating, you allow the fire specialists to best defend our property and our safety.
RED FLAG WARNING: The National Weather Service issues a RED FLAG WARNING to alert the public to an ongoing or expected critical fire weather pattern. Those critical fire weather conditions are either occurring at that time or will be happening shortly. You will hear that announcement on local weather reports.
Strong Winds: Winds exceeding 15-25 miles per hour, which can cause fires to spread quickly.
Low Humidity: Relative humidity levels below 25%, which dry out vegetation and make it more flammable.
Dry Vegetation: Prolonged dry conditions that create an abundance of dry, easily ignitable fuel such as grass, leaves, and branches.
Warm Temperatures: High temperatures that further dry out. “It's like having a blow dryer on our vegetation and fuel and brush, increasing the risk of wildfires,” said Alex Tardy, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego. (Oct 14, 2023).
Santa Ana winds are known for the hot dry weather that they bring in autumn, but they can actually arise in other times of the year. They also come with low relative humidity and beautiful clear blue skies. These low humidities, combined with an over-heated air mass and high velocity winds create critical fire weather conditions and destructive wildfires.
