WHAT ARE THE RICHTER AND THE MERCALLI SCALES? WHAT INFORMATION DO THEY TELL US?
1. RICHTER SCALE is used to measure the scale of absolute 'Magnitude' of an earthquake based on the amount of seismic energy released. (seismic waves)
2. MERCALLI SCALE measures the 'Intensity' of an earthquake based on based on the amount of observable destruction.
Both scales are used when measuring the impacts of seismic activity. (USGS)
